Animal Origins

Siobhan Davies

UK

At the heart of the short experimental documentary ANIMAL ORIGINS are the reflections of dancer and choreographer Siobhan Davies as she unravels the complex processes that underpin a life’s work in dance. At the same time she looks far beyond herself, touching upon the histories of movement embedded in each of us, allowing the watcher to enter a descriptive world and feel the weight of their own body walking or turning or falling. The images in the film echo Davies’ thoughts, showing the physical fluidity and depth of movement between all things. Many of these things are from the art world - from ancient sculpture through modern artworks and personal photos. The art is seen to be both felt and material, then transformed by the dancer into something they can hold and use.

DON’T I BELONG

Keith "K. Alexander" Corprew

UK/ USA

This film explores the experiences of Black males in the UK and the impact of their racial identity on their sense of belonging. Through improvisation-based tasks this film explores the ability for music and movement to offer an ethnographic look into their viewpoint. It also explores documentary storytelling and how can individual reflections be compiled to offer perspective of collective experiences.

RETURN

Hofesh Shechter, Gauthier Dance

UK/ GERMANY

There is no better way to celebrate being alive than through the lens of death. It gives real perspective on life, gives it meaning in a way. Return does not necessarily refer to a return from the dead, but “a way of bringing a person’s spirit back to life.”

Swans Never Die

Luca Di Bartolo, Ivonne Bello

ITALY

Swans never die is a video dance work that collects the interiorization of the metaphor of the swan interpreted in a modern key; here the swan is a subjective image of beauty, linked to the world of contemplation and the transformation into an altered time and space. Starting over, finding a blank space to start over.

BATTLE OF FISHES

IOANNA PARASKEVOPOULOU

GREECE

Six female bodies are suspended in space; they detect, meet and touch, dancing a light dance. Stop motion creates the illusion of the bodies' oscillation in the air, in an attempt to capture deviation and resistance to gravity. Battle of Fishes is an assemblage of snapshots, dislocated maps, technologies and bodies, rhythms and broken locations.
